Who else is building this

We are not first to autonomous cloud labs, and a page that pretended otherwise would not survive thirty seconds of scrutiny from anyone serious. Here is the actual competitive picture and where our advantage is real.

Into autonomous labs since 2025

Capital is now treating autonomous laboratories as an infrastructure asset class, in the same conversation as chip fabs and data centres. That is good news for us: the category question is settled, and the remaining question is who serves which customer at what price.

Where each player actually sits

PlayerWhat they offerOur read
Ginkgo Cloud Lab Launched March 2026. Browser access to an autonomous fleet of 70+ instruments on reconfigurable automation carts, with an AI agent that turns a plain-language protocol into a feasibility report and price. Open to academia through large biopharma. The closest competitor by a wide margin, and the strongest validation that this model is correct. They carry a Boston cost base, price is undisclosed and anchored on biopharma contracts, and they have no clinical substrate.
Emerald Cloud Lab The original cloud lab. 200+ instrument models under one software interface, a symbolic lab language, running 24/365. Technically deep and genuinely proven. The symbolic language is a real learning curve, and US pricing puts it out of reach for most academic budgets. Built for protocol authors rather than model builders.
Lila Sciences
$350M Series A, Jun 2026
“AI Science Factories” — a scientific superintelligence platform executing the full scientific method autonomously. Not a service competitor. They run autonomous labs for their own discovery programmes. They compete with us for talent and for the narrative, not for customers.
Periodic Labs
$300M seed; reportedly raising at $7.5B
AI scientists running autonomous physical experiments, founded by former OpenAI and DeepMind researchers. Focused on materials, semiconductors, energy. Different domain and vertically integrated. Relevant mainly as evidence of how aggressively this category is being priced.
Automata · Chemspeed/SciY Lab operating systems and vendor-agnostic self-driving-lab platforms sold to labs that own their own hardware. Picks-and-shovels layer. Potential suppliers or partners rather than competitors — they sell to the lab; we are the lab.
Legacy CROs Manual execution, relationship-led sales, quotes in weeks, results as documents. Still where almost all validation spend goes today. Our real competition for budget, and the least equipped to respond to an API-native offer.

The three things we can defend

Cost structure

Ginkgo launched US-based ADME services explicitly to match or beat Chinese vendor pricing — a defensive move that tells you price is the battleground. An India-based fleet attacks that structurally rather than promotionally.

The underserved buyer

Academic labs generate an enormous share of AI-designed candidates and cannot transact at biopharma rates. Serving them well is a volume wedge and a durable adoption motion as those scientists move into industry.

Clinical substrate

Apollo's pan-India EHR and biobank cannot be replicated by a Boston facility on any timeline that matters. Cost advantages get competed away; this one compounds.

What we do not claim. We are not first, not the largest, and not the most automated. We are betting that the winning position in validation infrastructure is the one that is affordable to the people generating the most hypotheses, and grounded in a patient population the incumbents cannot reach.
